The language laboratory is an audio or audio-visual installation used as an aid in modern language teaching. The language laboratory is used for language tutorials and remedial English classes. It contains play-back and recording equipment for students to practice the languages they are studying. It helps improve listening skill through audio machinery. It provides models of speech in the target language for imitation and manipulation by the students. Students can evaluate their performances themselves and acquire fluency in spoken language.
A language laboratory system comprises of a master console which is electrically connected to a number of rows of students’ booths, containing a students’ tape recorder and a boom arm. A language teacher must select and prepare the materials for the use in the lab. The teacher should monitor the works of the students and explain the functions of the lab equipment’s to them. There is facility for recording and reproducing voice. Teacher’s desk can control each and every learner.
